Maria Montessori

Her Life & Wrok

The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centred educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world.

It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

The Montessori method of education is based on motor education, sensory education and language, the care and management of the environment itself afford the principal means of motor education, while sensory education and the education of language are provided for by the Montessori material.

Montessori education is self-directed activities, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.

The Montessori material teaches specific learning outcome that progressively builds children’s knowledge and skills. Through repetition and practice, children master the areas of the Montessori Curriculum, which includes: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Culture.

Children learn in different ways, and at different paces, and the Montessori method meets each child’s needs. It provides children with a learning environment where they have respect, independence, and the freedom to direct their own learning experience. This results in high levels of motivation to learn.

The children learn to respect their environment. They are shown where lessons are found on the shelf and how to replace them in the correct manner. Children help with replenishing supplies on the shelves and cleaning up at the end of the day.

Montessori is both philosophy of child growth and a rationale for guiding such growth.  It is based on the child’s innate need to develop intellectual and physical abilities and provides a carefully prepared environment designed to meet and direct this need.
